Lewis T. "Rusty" Williams, M.D., Ph.D. Julia P. Gregory Brian G. Atwood Brian Atwood, a FivePrime Board member since May 2002, co-founded Versant Ventures after spending four years at Brentwood Venture Capital where as a general partner he led investments in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and bioinformatics. He also has more than 15 years of operating experience in the biotechnology industry, with emphasis on therapeutic products, devices, diagnostics, and research instrumentation. Prior to launching his career in venture capital, Mr. Atwood was founder, president, and CEO of Glycomed, a publicly traded biotechnology company. At Glycomed, Mr. Atwood concentrated on business development and strategic alliances. Prior to this, he co-founded and served as director of Perkin Elmer/Cetus Instruments, a joint venture for robotics automation and genomics research instruments and products later acquired by Perkin Elmer. Brian currently serves as a Board member at the private companies FivePrime Therapeutics, Inc., Veracyte, Inc., Trius Therapeutics, Inc., OpGen, Inc., PhaseRx, Inc., Clovis Pharmaceuticals, Immune Design Corp., and Mirina Corporation, as well as the public companies, Cadence Pharmaceuticals (CADX), and Helicos Biosciences (HLCS). Mr. Atwood received a Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Irvine, a Master's degree from the University of California, Davis, and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. James C. Blair, Ph.D. Dr. Blair joined the Board of FivePrime in January 2005 and has been a Partner of Domain since its founding in 1985. Present board memberships include Cadence Pharmaceuticals, Cell Biosciences, Clovis Oncology, Inc., CoDa Therapeutics, GenVault, Helixis, IntegenX, Inc., Meritage Pharma, NeuroPace, and Zogenix. Dr. Blair has over 40 years experience with venture and emerging growth companies. In the course of this experience, he has been involved in the creation and successful development at the Board level of over 40 life sciences ventures, including Amgen, Aurora Biosciences, Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Applied Biosystems, Dura Pharmaceuticals, GeneOhm Sciences, Molecular Dynamics, Nuvasive, Pharmion and Volcano. A former managing director of Rothschild Inc., Dr. Blair was directly involved at a senior level with Rothschild/New Court venture capital activities from 1978 to 1985. From 1969 to 1978, he was associated with F.S. Smithers and Co. and White, Weld and Co., two investment banking firms actively involved with new ventures and emerging growth companies. From 1961 to 1969, Dr. Blair was an engineering manager with RCA Corporation, during which time he received a David Sarnoff Fellowship. Dr. Blair currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Prostate Cancer Foundation, and he is on the Advisory Boards of the Department of Molecular Biology at Princeton University, the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, the USC Stevens Institute for Innovation, and the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology. Dr. Blair received a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Princeton University and a Master degree in Engineering and a Ph.D. From the University of Pennsylvania. Brook Byers Brook Byers, a FivePrime Board member since May 2002, has been closely involved with more than fifty new technology based ventures, including being founding President, and later Chairman, of four biotechnology companies which went on to be public companies with an aggregate market value over $8 billion. He formed the first Life Sciences practice group in the venture capital profession in 1984 and led KPCB to become a premier venture capital firm in the medical, healthcare and biotechnology sectors. He is currently on the Board of Directors of CardioDx, Crescendo, Five Prime Therapeutics, GenomicHealth, OptiMedica, Pacific Biosciences, Inc., Tethys, Veracyte and XDx, Inc. He was formerly a Director of Idec Pharmaceuticals (Chairman), Athena Neurosciences (Chairman), Signal Pharmaceuticals, Arris Pharmaceuticals, Genprobe and others. He is currently a Board member of the University of California at San Francisco Medical Foundation, the New Schools Foundation, Stanford's Bio-X Advisory Council and the Stanford Eye Council. In 2008, he was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2009, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Venture Capital Association. In May, 2010, he received an Honorary Ph.D. from Georgia Tech. Mr. Byers graduated in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech and received an M.B.A. from Stanford. Fred Cohen, M.D., Ph.D. Fred Cohen has been a member of FivePrime’s Board of Directors since May 2002. Prior to joining TPG Biotech in 2001, Dr. Cohen was a Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Cohen has played a role on the Boards or Scientific Advisory Boards of a variety of Biotechnology companies. He currently serves on the boards of Axcan Pharma, CardioDx, Expression Diagnostics (XDx), FivePrime, Genomic Health, Nodality, ProteoGenix, Quintiles Transnational Corp., Roka Biotechnology, and Veracyte. He received his M.D. from Stanford in 1984, his D.Phil. from Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar in 1980 and his B.S. in 1978 from Yale University. Dr. Cohen was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academics in 2004 and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2008. R. Lee Douglas Lee Douglas joined FivePrime’s Board in January 2002. He was a co-founder of COR Therapeutics, Inc. During his 10 years at COR, he served in a number of senior management positions, including COR's original CEO. Since 1998, Mr. Douglas has been an independent consultant to biotechnology companies, including Cytokinetics, Inc and Sunesis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. He was a member of the founding teams of FivePrime and Portola Pharmaceuticals, Inc., where he continues to serve as an advisor. Mr. Douglas also serves as a member of the board of Affymax, Inc. and Aerovance, Inc. Prior to co-founding COR, he was a general partner in the venture group at Robertson, Stephens & Co, and was involved in the start-up of several companies including Protein Design Labs, Inc. Mr. Douglas is also a Visiting Scholar in the Molecular and Cell Biology Department at University of California at Berkeley, where he conducts independent research on cytoskeletal motor proteins as drug targets in the protozoal parasites Trypanosoma brucei and Leishmania. He received his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, MCRP from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and B.A. from University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Mark McDade Mark McDade joined FivePrime’s Board in July 2006 and is Chief Operating Officer and EVP Global Operations, UCB SA. From 2002 to 2007 he was Chief Executive Officer and a Director of PDL Biopharma, Inc. Prior to PDL, he served as CEO of Signature BioScience, Inc. and was previously a co-founder and director of Corixa Corporation, where he served as Chief Operating Officer from September 1994 through December 1998 and as President and Chief Operating Officer from January 1999 until his departure in late 2000. Before Corixa, Mr. McDade was Chief Operating Officer of Boehringer Mannheim – Therapeutics, and prior to that held several positions at Sandoz Ltd. including business development, product management and general management. Mark McDade received a B.A. from Dartmouth College and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. |
